Due to their outstanding natural values and the role they play for human, peat bogs deserve special protection.
Since each peat bog is unique, each one requires tailor-made measures.
Together with the Nature and Human Foundation and the Norwegian company Asplan Viak, we decided to protect the Czerwone bog woodland peat bog. That is why we launched the project “Carpathians Unite – Conservation of Orawsko-Nowotarskie Peatlands”.
As part of the project, we are going to:
– build and modernize infrastructure to improve local water relations (dams, gates, dykes) and to limit penetration of the bog by tourists (footbridges),
– eliminate pine from the bog dome,
– conduct comprehensive environmental monitoring.
However, protective measures alone are not enough. Improvement of spatial management methods in the entire area of the Orawsko-Nowotarskie Peat Bogs and increase of social awareness about wetlands are equally important. That is why we are planning a series of workshops on supporting sustainable spatial management and proper land use for representatives of local governments as well as land owners and users, as well as an educational campaign addressed to schoolchildren and adults on the role and importance of wetlands and ways to protect them.
